We have often visited Colliford Lake – a reservoir and Cornwall’s largest inland body of water – many times in search of birds. When we visited recently, it was to check out Kerdroya, the recently installed labyrinth. It is still a work in progress – there are walls to be built on and hedges to grow taller, but it is already an impressive structure.
The labyrinth diameter is a mere 56 metres, but the pathway leading you into the centre and then out again is around 750 metres in length. It’s quite mind-bending to walk… and walk… and wonder how you are taking so long to reach the centre of such a small structure. It’s very cleverly done.
Kerdroya celebrates the craft of Cornish hedging – something that I have come to appreciate living here. Cornish hedges are made of earth, faced with two independent outer walls made of stone. My favourite walls are those containing large trees and shrubs, growing in what seems to be far too narrow a space for them to thrive.
At this time of year, a lovely coffee and ice-cream vendor is on site. The perfect treat after a walk on what turned out to be a very warm day.
